A Place of Forever

She dwells in a place of forever,
'though her distant light still beckons
like a beacon chasing darkness
in a dreamer's futile dream.

A terrible void gapes, now,
in love's wounded flesh,
a yawning chasm, cold abyss,
unfathomable in its bitter extremity.

I thought love would not be denied,
left unrequited.
I thought love would not be bereft,
left always wanting,
and forever love
would breathe in her essence,
seek her vital presence,
view every possible angle
from which her beauty would be revealed.

What is life, now, in this solitude?
Brief tick of utter despair, hope lost
in time's wanton progress,
a vapor fading from view.

Her precious love
was all-encompassing,
the tenderness of her touch
an exquisite caress,
her soft voice, a thrilling melody
like the sweet sound of bliss,
a fragile note of harmony,

but it's all lost, now,
in the ash of bitter destiny,
and love's glowing promise -
tomorrow, once seen clearly -
has been obscured,
the future darkly rewritten.
