Heart of the Universe

The fire burns brighter
in the heart and fireplace,
and I see your face
how it used to be,
way back when
we were just children.

We have grown so far apart,
like strangers to each other,
with all of space and time,
like a river, flowing between us.

We know we must cross
only to be lost
in tides of experience
we cannot master.
It moves faster
than we ever believed.

Still, I wish we had been free
to find some way,
some leisurely course,
straight to the true source,
straight to the heart of the universe.
