More Than a Dream

Dawn's breaking betrays
a brazen haze
where white clouds beguile,
and in a while
burnt sunshine unveils
enormous swales,
a wind beach-driven,
land riven in two.

So I mark the time
with an endless rhyme,
and echoes return
until I yearn for release
and, oh, sweet peace.

When sunset arrives,
two different lives
will watch shadows fly
into the reaching night,
into the rising dusk,
the hollow husk
of a dying day.

If you came back to stay,
what would I say to you,
of dreams we shared
or how we fared
apart? Where to start?

How do I explain this emotion?
A roiling, turbulent ocean
surrounding me,
pulling me down, drowning me
in time irretrievably lost.
A frightful cost, but I've paid.

If you had stayed
I might have found my way
home again,

but you're gone,
so I'm here all alone,
and I sing this sad song
although I know that it's wrong
to hold on
to a world that will never be.

Still, I want to believe
together our lives had meaning
more than a dream.
